Maintaining Your Own RV

If you own an RV, you must ensure that it is maintained in good condition. Unlike with a rental, it is your responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition at all times. These large vehicles often require a significant amount of maintenance, and this often depends on the vehicle model.

Before going on any trip, you should make sure that the vehicle goes through a thorough check, and any issues or repairs made before leaving on the trip. Ignoring even the slightest repairs can lead to a more costly repair job. You should do everything to ensure that you do not get any breakdown on the road. The RV has many components and features and it would be difficult for anyone who is not experienced to carry out the maintenance. It is often necessary to get professionals to carry out the vehicle maintenance.

While professionals can take care of the mechanical details, you can avoid paying for the full service by taking care of all the other details yourself.

Go through the interior to make sure that everything is in good shape prior to the trip, and all the fabric is in good condition. A successful trip will be determined by how prepared you are.

A good maintenance job will help you to avoid unpleasant surprises that can ruin a pleasant trip. Even when you are not travelling, you should carry out routine maintenance on the vehicle. Have a technician look at the engine and examine all the mechanical aspects at least once a year. Make sure you change the oil regularly as recommended by the manufacturer, and keep an eye on the vehicle mileage. It is important to have any repairs carried out immediately. If you drive around often in the hot seasons, the vehicle will require checks that are more frequent.

Always ensure that you check the pressure in all the tires, as well as the spares. The manufacturers usually recommend specific pressure depending on the tire. The manual usually has instructions that should be followed in order to ensure the RV is in good condition. Check all the propane tanks before you travel and make sure they are filled or replaced.

All the RV's interiors need the gas in order to run. You do not want to be in a situation where you run out of propane in a deserted location. You should also ensure that you have enough fuel at all times. Other checks you need to carry out include ensuring the windshield wipers are in good condition, checking all the lights, replacing air condition filters, checking the batteries and other equipment.

It is important to inspect the roof of the RV every couple of months. Look for any signs of cracks in the seals or any other signs of deterioration. Fill any cracks with silicon sealant to prevent further damage. Most dealerships stock RV sealant that is very efficient for the task. Heat and sunlight contributes to deterioration of the material and many RV owners have complained of roof leaks due to the cracks that are made worse by failure to inspect the roof.

USA News Biz: Lone Star and KEB: It's Not Over Yet

If you thought you'd heard the last of the Lone Star Funds saga in South Korea, think again.

On Tuesday, the Dallas-based private-equity firm, which has been trying to offload the stake in Korea Exchange Bank it bought in 2003, said it is considering filing arbitration claims against the Korean government for damages over its unwillingness to approve a number of prospective buyers for KEB. Lone Star alleges that by thwarting these attempts to sell, the government forced it to hold the stake for longer than necessary and incurred losses along the way.

Seoul's financial regulator finally gave the go-ahead in January to Hana Financial Group Inc. to buy a 51.02% stake in KEB for $3.5 billion from Lone Star. Lone Star bought a 64.6% stake in KEB in 2003 for 2.155 trillion won ($1.9 billion). Lone Star's exit was hobbled by ongoing disagreement over the sale price and a legal probe in October that found Lone Star guilty of stock manipulation. That put pressure on Hana to cut the price it would pay to Lone Star, to placate lawmakers and labor union members who felt the firm had reaped unfairly large gains.

Another sticking point is over Seoul's decision to impose capital gains taxes on the sales of its Korean investments. Lone Star, which had been holding the investment in KEB in a Belgian vehicle, has opposed the decision by the National Tax Service because of a tax treaty between Korea and Belgium. Lone Star and the tax authorities were involved in a number of legal disputes in 2007 over the tax agency's attempts to impose back taxes on property sales by the fund.

In a statement, John Grayken, chairman of Lone Star, said, "When Lone Star made these investments, we were optimistic about Korea's ability to recover from the shock of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis and believed we could rely on the Korean regulatory and tax laws to protect our interests in these investments. However, as the economy strengthened and Korean banks and businesses, including many foreign-owned banks like KEB, returned to profitability, public sentiment towards foreign investment in Korea soured. Korean financial and tax regulators responded with a series of illegal actions that resulted in billions of euros of damages to Lone Star's investors."

The news comes after the Korean government recently suggested it would adopt a more open stance to foreign investors as it tries for the third time to privatize Woori Finance Holdings, the country's largest financial company. Only Standard Chartered has a meaningful presence in the country, and HSBC also recently bowed out of retail banking there to concentrate on corporate banking.

Whether foreign investors want to rethink Korea's finance industry may well hinge on how this latest tussle between Lone Star and the country's regulators pan out.

How a bizarre ocean current could create coral refuges

Warming in the Pacific could lead to new currents that create islands of refuge for corals, new research suggests.?

Global warming is expected to have devastating effects on coral reefs, but recent research points to a few exceptions.

Warming in the equatorial Pacific may actually create refuges for corals around a handful of islands, even as it bleaches, or kills, corals elsewhere, suggests new research that predicts increased upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water in these places.

"These little islands in the middle of the ocean?can counteract global trends?and have a big impact on their own future, which I think is a beautiful concept," said study researcher Kristopher Karnauskas, a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution scientist, in a press release issued by the institution.

If predictions made by Karnauskas and colleague Anne Cohen are accurate, warming around the Gilbert Islands will be slower than elsewhere, giving the corals and their symbiotic algae a better chance to adapt. Perhaps these refuges could eventually become a source of new corals and other species that could recolonize reefs damaged by warming, Karnauskas said.

Corals are animals that host tiny plants, or algae, that feed them using photosynthesis. The reefs corals build provide important habitat for many species. Warming water can cause corals to expel their algae, a?phenomenon called bleaching, which turns the corals white and puts them under great stress and at risk of death. ?

Global climate models predict the central tropical Pacific will warm by about 5.0 degrees Fahrenheit (2.8 degrees Celsius) by the end of the century. To get a better idea of how conditions might play out on a small geographic scale, the researchers used the global models in combination with a fine-scale regional model.

The low-lying coral atoll islands, part of?the nation of Kiribati, are as small as 1.54 square miles (4 square kilometers).

As a result of other changes?caused by warming, their work predicts the deep equatorial undercurrent (EUC), an eastward flowing current at the equator, will strengthen by 14 percent; this strengthening would create habitat for corals to flourish alongside the islands by bringing cooler water and nutrients to the surface. Though the EUC is an east-to-west current, when it hits an island, water gets deflected upward.

"Our model suggests that the amount of upwelling will actually increase by about 50 percent around these islands and reduce the rate of warming waters around them by about 1.25 degrees F (0.7 degrees C) per century," Karnauskas said.

The research appears in the April 30 issue of the journal Nature Climate Change.

Sony exec confirms IPTV aspirations, says they're on hold due to bandwidth caps

Sony exec reportedly confirms IPTV aspirations, says they're on hold due to bandwidth caps

CES came and went without an update on the status of an alleged cable TV alternative the Wall Street Journal claimed Sony was building to push ahead its four screen strategy, but now Sony Network Entertainment VP Michael Aragon has given the rumor new life. Variety reports that during its Entertainment & Technology Summit Monday Aragon confirmed the company is considering offering TV services over the internet, but is waiting to see what happen with ISP bandwidth caps. Specifically referring to the Comcast 250GB limit that has recently come under fire from Netflix and others now that its Xfinity TV app on Xbox 360 skirts the cap entirely, Aragon noted cable companies have the pipe and the bandwidth and can restrict competing services. We've heard Netflix has been trying to negotiate its own path around such restrictions even as Redbox partners with Verizon on a video service, and rumors have periodically popped up linking Apple, Microsoft and any other tech giant you could name to similar plans. What does all this mean for the future? No one can say for sure yet, but unless some of the key players start to partner up instead of go to war we may need the FCC to step in before anything significant changes.

Sony exec confirms IPTV aspirations, says they're on hold due to bandwidth caps originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 May 2012 21:44:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Google, an underdog in Asia, lays plans for Taiwan data center

Taiwan gets Internet traffic easily from the United States. I sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google dominates Internet search engines by such a wide margin in the United States that it?s a verb as well as the corporate name of its Silicon Valley-based creator.

But in China, Google vies with the local, government-approved search engine Baidu ? which means 100 degrees ? and lags South Korea?s local brand Naver. It competes head on against fellow American company Yahoo for searches in Taiwan, splitting traffic roughly 50-50. Yahoo has also held a historic grip on Japan.

So this week, the 14-year-old Google announced that by the end of next year, it would open a data center in Taiwan to improve search speeds and reliability around the region.

Google has already started building data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. But the larger one in Taiwan comes with government incentives and will boast a specific geographic advantage. That is, Taiwan gets Net traffic easily from the United States, home to Google and the source of numerous Internet search results, as it sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly here from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google will spend a combined $700 million on the three centers, which generally house computers and storage systems that help speed connections and keep them secure.

?More new Internet users are coming online everyday here in Asia than anywhere else in the world,? Google?s Asia Pacific President Daniel Alegre said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the coastal facility in Taiwan. ?That is why we are building data centers in Asia ??to ensure that our users here have the fastest, most reliable access possible to all of our services, so they can continue putting them to work.?

Google?s Taiwan data center will speed up searches particularly in China, which is just 160 kilometers (100 miles) away but has sought to censor Web searches. Baidu now controls about 75 percent of the searches in China.

?That?s a key, to serve China,? says Marvin Ma, software and services analyst with the market research firm IDC in Taipei. ?China will notice a clear improvement. And this way Google can avoid the censorship problem.?

In 2010, Google shut down its locally based Chinese search engine after a dispute with the communist government over censorship and cyber-attacks, a row that prompted harsh words from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Google won?t give market shares for Asia or estimate the overall number of users in the region. In South Korea, Naver still handles about two-thirds of the Internet searches, analysts estimate. But two years ago, Google and Yahoo signed a search-engine technology deal that has muffled the rivalry in Japan.

Google is also catching up in Taiwan as the ever popular Yahoo retrenches, with reports of layoffs in the pipeline, says Jamie Lin, founding partner with Taipei-based tech investor appWorks Ventures. ?If they don?t make any mistakes, Google is going to be the dominant player in a couple of years,? he says.
