What exactly are bath salts? ? Health & Fitness ? Bangor Daily News

Bath salts, a synthetic drug that became illegal in Maine over the summer, has posed a problem for law enforcement agencies throughout the state, particularly in the Bangor area. Below is a brief summary of what bath salts are and what happens when people are on them.

What are bath salts? Bath salts are designer drugs that typically contain mephedrone or methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV. The drugs? appearance is similar to that of cocaine. Bath salts are considered dangerous and mimic the effects of methamphetamines.

Why are they called bath salts? They are packaged as ?soothing bath salts? to get around federal laws. They are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration because they are not marketed for human consumption and in fact are often marketed as plant fertilizer. Components of the drugs are marketed under names such as Cloud 9, Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky and White Rush and are sold over the counter in the states that have not banned them. Maine stores were allowed to sell them until July.

What do people experience when they take bath salts? Police, doctors and emergency responders have observed signs of paranoia, hallucinations, convulsions and psychotic behavior in users of the drug.

Are bath salts addictive? Users mostly snort the drug, but it also can be smoked, eaten or injected and just like the methamphetamines they are designed to mimic, bath salts produce cravings that are very strong, Bangor Police Chief Ron Gastia said.

?They start to use those for the same reason they use any drug: They want to get a high,? he said recently of those who consume the drug. They continue to use it because it?s cheap and ?it has very addictive qualities.?

Where is the bath salts trend growing? ?It?s everywhere,? Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Law enforcement and hospital officials from all over the state are reporting that it has arrived in their communities.

Food Pantries Face Unprecedented Demand They Can't Fill

For the third consecutive year, Hunger Action Month has had to contend with a 1 in 6 hunger rate, the highest percentage since such monitoring began in 1995, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

As 49 million Americans struggle to put food on their plates, pantries around the country are grappling with an unprecedented demand?and diversity in clients?that they often can?t afford to accomodate.

"We are seeing many more seniors, but we're also seeing many more families with children,? Doreen Wohl, executive director of the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, told the Huffington Post. ?People are coming as a last resort. They've exhausted all other resources.?

WSCH, the largest food pantry in New York City, has seen a 48 percent increase in clients over the past three years and served more than 88,000 meals in July alone.

Enid Borden, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels, has seen a similar swell in clients.

"In this economic downturn, we have found that those very same seniors who were once our volunteers, are now in need of our services," Borden told the Huffington Post. "This is the richest nation on the face of the earth, but the people who raised us and fed us and tilled the soil are going hungry."

The steadily rising cost of food and gasoline prices have placed an enormous strain on many of these programs. This challenge has been exacerbated by recent federal cuts that will slash funding for food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries?nationwide? by 40 percent, the Daily News reported.

Such monetary constraints have forced pantries to slash services and turn some of those in need away.

"We sometimes have to put people on a waiting list,? Borden said. ?That is essentially saying to someone who is 85 years old, ?I'm sorry, but we just can't feed you today.? How long can someone of that age wait? None of our programs want to put anyone on a waiting list, but there's only so much we can do.?

Though WSCAH has had to scale back on its financial services programs, the nonprofit said its relatively fortunate when it comes to budget cuts. Other programs in New York City have had to reduce their operations to once a week, instead of daily.

To meet the needs of their steadily growing clientele, the pantry is learning to rely increasingly on individual donations and self-promotion, to attract new supporters. The nonprofit has also taken to referring clients to other kitchens around the city, when its resources are limited.

"We have appealed to the individuals who contribute to us for donations and that is our biggest asset,? Wohl noted. Our backup plan is always to reach out increasingly to the high-income community around us. That being said, we are strong advocates of maintaining our federal and state budgets.?

Despite the record-high number of Americans living in poverty, Borden also remains confident in the generosity of supporters and foresees a future without hunger.

"The heart is still there, just the pocketbook isn't,? Borden said. ?We may have to beg, borrow, and plead to continue doing the work we do, but we'll keep doing it. Hunger is a disease, but it's a disease we can cure in our lifetime."

Judge refuses to extend sale timeline for Solyndra (AP)

WILMINGTON, Del. ? A Delaware bankruptcy judge on Tuesday refused to extend the sale timeline for failed solar-panel manufacturer Solyndra LLC, which received a half-billion-dollar federal loan guarantee and was once touted by President Barack Obama in support of his administration's economic policies.

In 2009, Solyndra became the first renewable-energy company to receive a loan guarantee under a stimulus-law program to encourage green energy and was said to be a model for creating green jobs. But the Fremont, Calif.-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this month and laid off its 1,100 employees, spurring investigations both by the FBI and Republicans in Congress.

Solyndra is now eyeing an Oct. 27 auction of its assets, assuming that more than one potential buyer emerges. But the official committee of Solyndra's unsecured creditors argued that the sale process should be extended at least four weeks to drum up as much interest as possible and maximize the return for creditors.

"We are concerned that there is a rush to sale here," said Bonnie Glantz Fatell, an attorney for the creditors committee.

Judge Mary Walrath rejected the committee's request to extend the sale, but she ordered Solyndra to send a representative to an international solar energy industry trade show in Dallas next month. She agreed with the creditors committee that the conference could be a good venue for marketing Solyndra's assets.

Walrath authorized up to $4 million in debtor-in-possession financing for Solyndra, but the company and its secured lenders, including the Department of Energy, argued that it does not have enough cash to devote four more weeks to lining up potential buyers. Given the political firestorm and headlines surrounding Solyndra, anyone interested in the company already knows it's for sale, they suggested.

"The company has been searching for money for a long time. People know about this," said Michael Rosenthal, an attorney representing private investors including Argonaut Ventures I, which holds a 39 percent stake in Solyndra's parent company and is providing bankruptcy financing for Solyndra.

Argonaut is an investment vehicle of the George Kaiser Family Foundation of Tulsa, Okla. The foundation is headed by billionaire George Kaiser, a major Obama campaign contributor and a frequent visitor to the White House, who raised between $50,000 and $100,000 for Obama's 2008 campaign.

Debra Grassgreen, an attorney for Solyndra, argued that the parties who stand to gain or lose the most in the bankruptcy sale are the federal government and "sophisticated financial institutions."

They would asked for a longer sale process if they thought it would help, she said.

But creditors attorney Fatell said a rapid sale process will dissuade potential buyers who don't have enough time to check out the assets or arrange financing.

"We believe that more time can only benefit all parties," she said.

Justice Department lawyer Matthew Troy countered that Solyndra does not have the cash to wait. And he said Solyndra's case is really a "Chapter 22" bankruptcy because the company went through a previous restructuring in February that didn't work.

Under the February restructuring, Argonaut Ventures and another private investment firm, Madrone Partners LP, stand to be repaid before U.S. taxpayers. Congressional leaders have said allowing private investors to move ahead of taxpayers for repayment may have been illegal.

Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman has said the February restructuring was "entirely legal," according to media reports.

Walrath also ruled that Solyndra must set aside enough money to pay its electric bill for a month, a compromise between the company's request to set aside two weeks' worth and a California utility's request that it set aside two months' worth.

When a Russian spaceship returned three space men home today, the recovery team sent to meet them caught a stunning sight: a Soyuz space capsule floating to Earth under a parachute with a bright moon in background.

The spectacular space snapshot is one of several taken by NASA photographer Bill Ingalls of the Russian-built Soyuz TMA-21 space capsule as it landed at 9:59 a.m. local time on the southern steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. ?It was still late Thursday in the United States at the time of landing. Ingalls' photo of the Soyuz under its parachute reveals a stunning view of the not-quite-full moon in the background. The moon reached its full phase on Sept. 12 in what astronomers call a Harvest Moon.

Another photo by Ingalls captures the Soyuz at the moment of landing, when the space capsule kicked up a plume of dust just after firing landing rockets to cushion the final touchdown. The photographer snapped the view from one of the recovery helicopters before landing, then took more photos from the ground of the Soyuz crew back on Earth.

The Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft landed with NASA astronaut Ron Garan and cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko and Alexander Samokutyaev onboard, ending a 164-day trip to the International Space Station. ?The three men launched into space on April 4 and were aboard the space station during NASA's final two space shuttle missions in history, as well as the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight and the 30th anniversary of the U.S. space shuttle fleet.

While the Soyuz landed right on target and on time, Russia's Mission Control team in Moscow did lose radio contact with the spacecraft during the descent, causing what appeared to be some tense moments. During his mission, Garan shared his spaceflight experience via regular updates and photos to the Internet using the social networking site Twitter (where he wrote as @Astro_Ron) and on his website FragileOasis.org, which is dedicated to increasing awareness of the Earth and its environment.

Garan is expected to return home to Houston? by next week and will take questions from reporters on Thursday, Sept. 22, NASA says.

"I will miss a thousand other things that define life in space and I understand and appreciate that I have been given a special privilege to have these experiences," Garan wrote. As long as I can remember since my early childhood, the concept of Christianity has been the cornerstone of my identity. My parents raised me with conservative southern Baptist values and I attended Christian school from kindergarten through high school. My love of God and presence of the Holy Spirit moved me to gently share the message of Christianity to others in need. In fourth grade I began having feelings for a female classmate that were unlike what I had experienced with other friends. I was unable to pinpoint what those feelings were, but knew that I thought of her at every waking moment and longed for her closeness.

One Wednesday morning, the school attended a chapel gathering and the speaker got on the pulpit and began to preach to us against homosexuality. Sweat dripped off of the pastors? brow as he angrily listed Bible verses that appeared to condemn same-sex attraction and behavior. His message was clear; anyone who engaged in any type of feelings or sexual contact with the same gender were condemned to permanent separation from God and sent to a future of eternal burning hell and torment. He was emphatic that being gay and lesbian was a choice and that no one could have a relationship with God and also be a homosexual.

After the chapel service, some classmates appeared unaffected as if they had already heard the doctrine of the ?dangers? of homosexuality. Others became hyper vigilant against any closeness between each other and shouted out ?homo? and ?faggot.? That morning, our young minds were taught and programmed to hate; this would be followed by countless episodes of homophobic brainwashing.

My heart sank after I heard the message. I knew that the pastor had been speaking about me and my homosexuality. I felt unworthy, shameful, defective, guilty, self-loathing, and worst of all, damned. I was an abomination before my Lord. I immediately sought to reject this ?evil? part of me and discontinued communication with the girl that I had felt such intense attraction. I prayed every night for God to lift my feelings and change me to have ?normal? feelings for the opposite sex. Prior to fourth grade, my yearbook pictures displayed a bright eyed girl with a wide smile. After that year of hearing my impending doom, the following photographs presented a girl with a broken self-esteem, tearful eyes and a painfully fake grin.

In high school I fell deeply in love with my female best friend. After my mother read my diary and learned of my feelings for her, I was forced to break off all contact with her and transfer to a different school. My mother told me that the love I felt for her was ?counterfeit? and ?derived by Satan? and that my sins were ?comparable to child molestation.? I was immediately sent to a Christian therapist with intensive sessions twice weekly to cure me of my sinful illness. I was so fearful that my parents would disown me if I were a lesbian that I began to date men to ease their discomfort. I was deemed as cured and a successful ?ex-gay.?

Going against my natural feelings made me feel raped of my true identity which brought me into a deep depression. Once I moved out to college, I met a lesbian and decided to give up my Christian identity so that we could be in a relationship. Part of me felt free and happy, but another part of me longed to be accepted by God. Being with women felt right, but in the back of my mind I felt I was damned to hell for my actions. Just as I had tried to push my attraction to women away, I tried faithfully as hard to push God away. The struggle was nearly equally as difficult.

After much internal torment to deny part of my identity, I began to question everything I had learned growing up in the Church. I felt angry at God and thought that being damned for loving another person was a contradiction to the message of Christianity. After all, did not Jesus teach that to love others was the second greatest commandment aside from loving God? How could genuine love between two committed adults be a sin? I began a quest to extensively study the scriptures that seemingly condemned homosexuality. I learned the meaning of many words in the Hebrew and Greek language, studied the cultural atmosphere of biblical times and examined the nearest to original texts of the Bible. To my surprise, I discovered that much of the verses that seemed to blatantly deem homosexuality as a sin were interpreted differently and changed over time in translation. In summary, it appeared that the original words currently defined as homosexuality were discussing inhospitality, rape, male prostitution, pagan sex rituals, and child molestation (Read my first post for more information: http://moanti.wordpress.com/2010/08/02/gaychristians/).? Even the Greek and Hebrew words for abomination and unnatural meant socially unaccepted and out of the ordinary, not gravely sinful or deviant. I found not that the Bible was wrong, but that I may have been reading it incorrectly.

My upbringing had taught me to view this new information as a lie and I still felt discomfort of possible deception. I faithfully did research for years and prayed to God to reveal His word to me in my heart. I had realized that my guilt for being a lesbian was not derived from conviction, but from the Christians who viewed this action as a terrible sin. My ability to feel joy in my relationship with God and feel His love was being blocked by my overwhelming worry of going to Hell for something that I was programed to believe was unforgivable without changing. This feeling came from humans and I believe that Satan took advantage of this to make me feel unworthy of being a Christian and separate me from God.

Thankfully, questioning my seemingly conflictual identities of being a Christian and a lesbian has led me to a deeper relationship with Christ than I could have ever imagined without having to go through this struggle. I realized that all of my prayers to take away my attractions to females were not answered because it was not something that was necessary to change. Through prayer and a thirst for God, I now feel a warm sense of peace that He loves me and accepts me as He created me; a lesbian. With this knowledge, my bright eyes and wide smile has returned.

Perhaps the most amazing thing that has happened in my life since reconciling my sexual orientation and faith is finding a church that is made up of a body of gay and lesbian believers. Previous to this, I felt there was still a small part of me that was spiritually blocked when I was inside of a conservative church that I knew did not accept me as I am. When I entered this new church, I was engulfed with the Holy Spirit to such a strong degree that it felt like I did when I was baptized. After hearing the lesbian speaker talk about how she was healed from two types of stage four cancers by her faith and seeing her love for God, I knew that the Lord had a purpose for her life and kept her around to spread the loving Gospel to other gay and lesbians. Why would God heal her from the edge of death and use a ?practicing homosexual? to spread Christ?s love if He did not accept her as His child with a Heavenly purpose? Would God use her and then discard her to Hell? I certainly think not! The Lord knows our hearts, and one who seeks to serve Him will not be denied of salvation! This moment for me was life changing and I have been blessed with an assurance that I am Heaven bound! God has done so much for me and has allowed me to find the most amazing Christian life-partner. I am certain that our relationship is blessed because it is God-centered.

I have since encountered many other gay and lesbians with different religious experiences. Most that I have met have rejected religion entirely due to the hate that they had experienced from members of the church and family members. This saddened me and I feel overcome to share the message that I have learned with others that are struggling to help them realize that they can be both a lesbian and gay as well as a Christian.
