SOMERVILLE ? They met on Facebook and liked each other, authorities said.
That online encounter led to a yearlong relationship where Arturo Rea, 21, and a 15-year-old girl allegedly had sex on several occasions at his North Plainfield home, court documents state.
Rea didn?t use physical force, but he manipulated the girl into having sex, court documents state.
After the girl?s mother reported the relationship to police, Rea was charged this week with sexual assault, court documents state.
Rea was arrested on Thursday and made his first court appearance today before Superior Court Judge Paul Armstrong. With his long black hair reaching the top of his back, Rea wore a yellow prison uniform and had his hands cuffed behind him.
Armstrong explained the judicial process and Rea?s rights as a defendant, and then Rea was returned to Somerset County Jail on $50,000 bail.
An arrest affidavit filed today in Superior Court indicates that the girl?s mother visited the North Plainfield Police Department on Monday to report that her daughter was sexually assaulted by Rea.
During an interview on Tuesday with a North Plainfield detective, the girl explained the nature of her relationship with Rea, according to the affidavit. ?They met via the social networking website ?Facebook? and liked each other,? the affidavit states.
The girl said that she and Rea had sex multiple times over the course of their relationship between June 2011 and June 2012, according to the affidavit. During that time period, the girl was 14 years old and Rea was 19, the affidavit states.
The girl said she told Rea she was 14, the affidavit states. According to the affidavit, ?the sexual intercourse never involved force, but (the girl) states that Mr. Rea would want it more and more as their relationship progressed.?
In an interview with police on Thursday, Rea admitted to having a sexual relationship with the girl, but claimed she told him that she was 16 years old, the affidavit states. Rea ?never stopped to question her age or find out otherwise,? the affidavit states.
Rea said the first time that he realized the girl lied about her age was when he received messages from her mother, advising him to leave her alone, the affidavit states. Rea said he and the girl had sex on several occasions at his North Plainfield home, the affidavit states.
