"Living Documents" is the theme of the float by Simonds Masonic Lodge in last Thursday's Burlington Fourth of July Parade.
"We are celebrating the charters that form the cornerstone and foundation of America's liberty and freedom," says Douglas Dodge, the Master of Simonds Lodge. ?"In order of their creation, the Declaration of Independence, the Massachusetts Constitution, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, have a lot to tell us about our growing understanding of our freedoms, rights, and responsibilities. ?We wanted to give everyone in Burlington a chance to meet these documents face-to-face."
The Lodge's parade and float chairman, Wayne Higden, goes on the explain, "What makes them 'living' is not just that they can be amended or reinterpreted. ?These are the Living Documents because they are what patriots believe in ? both historic patriots and the modern-day patriots. ?Today's patriots serve in harm's way as members of the military or as local police and firefighters. ?They serve Burlington and our surrounding towns in government roles, in town meeting, in our schools, in our hospitals, and in the other institutions that make up the fabric of America. ?What unites us all on the level of patriotic citizenship is our recognition that the fundamental principles and values expressed by these documents are as meaningful today in 2013 as they were when they were written."
